You've been made to feel your anger is a threat

Whenever you show anger, it is treated as a threat — dangerous, aggressive, too much — while others express the same anger and are heard as passionate or reasonable. So you have learned to swallow your anger entirely, afraid of how it will be received, and you have lost access to a feeling that once told you when you were wronged.

What’s really going on

This is a real and specific injustice — that your anger is judged more harshly than others'. Your anger is treated as dangerous because of who you are, not what you feel — the same anger in a different kind of person is heard as passion or reasonable protest, so the judgment is about your identity, not your emotion, and the fault you have taken on, that your anger is uniquely dangerous, is a bias about your kind, not a truth about your feeling. Do not lose access to your own anger — it is the signal that something is wrong, the energy that fuels resistance, the self-respect that refuses mistreatment, so a person cut off from their anger is disarmed; keep it, feel it, let it inform you. And channel the anger through a form they cannot dismiss — the cold clarity, the precise argument, the dignified insistence, which carry the anger's force while denying them the excuse, so let your anger become resolve, far harder to dismiss than rage. Where is your anger treated as a threat?
