Knowledge + Guidance

How do I keep caring at work without running myself into the ground?

You keep the door open for people. You also keep a line that says: this far, and no further. Most days that balance holds. Then a day comes when it doesn't, and you can't tell if you're tired or if something is actually wrong. Here is what is really happening. You are managing two pulls at once — staying open to people, and protecting the energy that lets you stay open at all. That is not a flaw in you. That is the actual work of the job, and almost no one says it out loud. So you carry it silently, and mistake the weight for a personal failing. It isn't failing. It's a daily choice you haven't yet made deliberate. You can learn to make it on purpose, every day, before the day makes it for you.

The core distinction between care and over-function needs brief teaching, but the real change happens through daily practice, so guidance leads.

What’s really going on

Draw a line each day between what is yours to carry and what is not. Care for people; do not carry their outcomes for them. Set the boundary before you are tired, not after you've already given too much. The weight you feel is not proof of devotion — it is a signal to choose, again, what is actually yours.

A moveName one thing you're carrying right now that was never yours to carry, and set it down today.
A moveAt the end of each workday, write two lists: what you gave, and what you kept for yourself.
A moveBefore you say yes to one more thing, say the real cost out loud to yourself first.
A movePick one person or problem you keep trying to fix, and stop trying today — just for today.
A moveBuild one small, fixed action that marks the end of your workday, and do it even on the hard days.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You notice the drift toward carrying too much before it turns into exhaustion.
  • You keep showing up for people with less resentment underneath it.
  • You can state your limits plainly, without over-explaining or guilt.
  • You have a daily test to tell real care apart from taking on what isn't yours.
