Social media platforms have developed memorialization options that allow profiles to persist after death as sites of ongoing grief and tribute — a development for which there is no real precedent. The profile of the dead becomes a strange kind of presence: familiar in form, impossible in reality, a place where grief gathers without anywhere to go. What this does to grief — and to the grieving — is still being understood.
