The inner critic

The voice that watches your work and finds it wanting did not arrive as an enemy — it arrived as a reader, as a standard-keeper, as the part of you that has loved something beautiful and wants that for your own making. The trouble is not that it speaks but that it speaks too early, before the work has grown into the thing it is trying to become. Learning to hear it at the right hour, and to close the screen against it at all other hours, is among the longest disciplines of a creative life.
