Video games — examined

The young have built entire universes inside boxes of light, which Nasreddin would have found either magnificent or deeply suspicious — probably both in quick succession. The question is not whether these worlds are real enough, but whether the person playing them is real enough to know when to return. A game that teaches you something true about yourself is a game worth playing; a game that substitutes for that knowledge is a different kind of story.
