Fearlessness Through Acceptance: Abaya

Development of genuine fearlessness rooted not in denial but in full acceptance of the body's vulnerability, illness, and mortality.

Why It Matters

Abaya, fearlessness, was a hallmark of Dipa Ma's presence and teaching. True fearlessness about the body is not pretending it is invulnerable or that appearance does not matter; it is the courage to face and accept the body's real vulnerability. Much body image anxiety is rooted in the underlying terror of aging, illness, and death. By trying to maintain a 'perfect' appearance, people unconsciously believe they are warding off these inevitable transitions. Dipa Ma worked extensively with the dying and seriously ill, and she taught that fearlessness emerges precisely when you stop running from these truths. When you fully accept that your body will age, get sick, and eventually fail—and that this is not a personal tragedy but the human condition—the desperate need to control appearance releases. You can then care for your body from a place of love rather than fear. This kind of fearlessness doesn't come from positive thinking or affirmations; it comes from looking directly at reality and finding that you survive it psychologically. Once you have faced mortality and accepted it, concerns about whether your thighs are the 'right' size seem naturally to fall away, replaced by the simple desire to inhabit your life fully.
