Metta, or loving-kindness, is a cornerstone practice in Dipa Ma's teachings and directly addresses the hostile relationship many people have with their bodies. Body image distortion often involves subtle or overt hatred: disgust at appearance, anger at the body's limitations, rejection of its needs. Metta practice systematically reverses this, beginning with phrases of genuine goodwill directed at yourself. 'May I be well. May I be healthy. May I be safe. May I live with ease.' When these words are combined with actual feeling and body awareness, they reprogram the nervous system's baseline from rejection to acceptance. Dipa Ma taught that metta toward your own body is not indulgence; it is the foundation of healing and real health. You cannot truly heal what you hate. Over time, metta practice creates a new internal environment—one of warmth rather than judgment, support rather than sabotage. This doesn't mean the body becomes perfect in your eyes; it means you meet it with the patience and compassion you would offer a beloved child.
