Patanjali teaches that mastery requires abhyasa (dedicated, repeated practice) paired with vairagya (non-attachment to results). This dyad is crucial for emotional dysregulation treatment. Abhyasa translates directly to DBT's emphasis on skill rehearsal: emotion regulation improves through consistent practice of distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and mindfulness techniques. However, abhyasa alone creates rigid perfectionism. Vairagya—releasing attachment to whether a skill "works" today—prevents despair when emotions remain intense despite effort. This prevents the secondary dysregulation common in emotional dysregulation: frustration that techniques haven't eliminated pain. The combination teaches practitioners to honor their practice commitment while accepting that emotions unfold in their own timeline. DBT's behavioral activation becomes sustainable when paired with this philosophical reorientation toward non-attachment, reducing the pressure that often intensifies emotional spiraling.
