Patanjali's samadhi (integrated absorption and witness consciousness) as the state of Self-leadership from which all parts can be recognized and compassionately held.
Samadhi, the ultimate goal of Patanjali's yoga, is a state of unified consciousness where the observer, the process of observing, and the observed merge into seamless awareness. In IFS language, this is the capacity to access the Self—the calm, wise, compassionate presence that can observe and work with all parts without reactivity or fusion. Patanjali teaches that samadhi is not a distant mystical state but a natural capacity that emerges as obstacles are cleared. For Internal Family Systems work, developing this witness consciousness is essential. When you operate from Self, you can see protective parts without judgment, recognize their positive intentions, and hold space for their fears and needs. The Self in samadhi doesn't fight parts or try to eliminate them; instead, it extends compassionate understanding. This state of integrated awareness allows true healing, because parts feel seen and valued rather than shamed. By anchoring your awareness in Self-samadhi, you create the psychological safety necessary for parts to soften their protective strategies and begin unburdening.
