Why It Matters

Satya (truthfulness) and ahimsa (nonviolence) are the second and first yamas (ethical restraints) of yogic living. For dysregulated clients, these principles illuminate the DBT dialectic: authentic emotional expression (satya) paired with responsibility to others and self (ahimsa). Many dysregulated clients oscillate between extremes: suppressing emotions entirely (violating satya, fragmenting authenticity) or explosive expression (violating ahimsa, harming self and others). Patanjali teaches that spiritual development requires both radical honesty about inner experience and deep commitment to causing no harm. In DBT, this manifests through interpersonal effectiveness skills: assertive communication that honors both truth and relationship. Satya asks: what am I genuinely feeling? Ahimsa asks: how do I express this truthfully without cruelty? The Yoga Sutras suggest this isn't constraint but liberation—when emotions are expressed with both honesty and responsibility, they discharge naturally and relationships deepen. For shame-prone clients, satya offers permission to acknowledge what they actually feel without judgment. For aggressive clients, ahimsa provides ethical grounding. Together, these principles guide dysregulated clients toward mature emotional expression: complete honesty about inner experience, expressed with care for all beings involved. This reframes emotion regulation not as suppression but as skilled, ethical communication.
