Carbon accounting feels like too much — where do I even start?

You were handed a task and a pile of frameworks, and no one told you which parts matter yet. This is not a sign you are behind. Carbon accounting is new to almost everyone doing it — the field itself is still settling its own rules. The overwhelm is not the methodologies. It is the belief that you must master all of them before you are allowed to start. That belief is false and it is costing you time. Your team needs one number, estimated honestly, more than it needs a perfect system. You are not alone in this — your pod faces the same gaps. Treat the missing data as a shared problem to solve together, not a personal failure to hide.

The field has real technical content a newcomer must learn, but the paralysis is emotional — so teaching alone won't move them; they need direction to act on partial knowledge too.

What’s really going on

You do not need to know every methodology today. Pick the one standard your team must use now, learn only that, and act on the data you have. Gaps are normal in this work — document them and move. Waiting for complete data is not caution. It is hiding.

A moveName the one standard your project actually requires — not the ten you could learn — and read only that section this week.
A moveList every data gap you've found in one shared document with your pod, instead of carrying each one alone.
A moveFor each gap, write your best estimate and the method you used, then move forward. A flagged estimate is honest work.
A moveSet a meeting with your pod this week just to compare gap lists — you will find you're solving the same problems separately.
A moveChoose one completed estimate, however rough, and bring it to your team by Friday. Done and imperfect beats perfect and absent.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You can explain, in plain words, the one methodology you're actually using and why.
  • Your team has a shared list of data gaps instead of several private, unspoken ones.
  • You've produced one real estimate, flagged honestly, instead of zero perfect ones.
  • You stop treating uncertainty as proof you're unqualified for this work.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
