Our emissions data is full of gaps—how do we measure it anyway?

You sit with spreadsheets full of holes. Some suppliers answer, some don't. Some numbers are measured, most are guessed. You feel the gap between what you're reporting and what's real, and it sits on your chest. Notice what you are actually asking of yourself: certainty that does not exist. No team has complete data. The ones who move are not the ones who waited for it — they named their method, owned their gaps, and published anyway. This is not your failure. It is the condition of the work. Your task is not perfect measurement. Your task is honest measurement, stated plainly, improved on a schedule.

The team likely already knows estimation frameworks; what stalls them is overwhelm and the fear of publishing an imperfect number, which is a coaching problem.

What’s really going on

You will never have complete data. Stop waiting for it. Agree with your team on the best estimate you can defend today, write down every assumption, and publish the number. A figure with visible gaps, used and corrected, serves the work better than silence dressed up as caution.

A moveCall a meeting this week and name every data gap out loud, one by one.
A moveChoose one estimation method as a team and write it down as your shared standard.
A moveAssign each remaining gap to one named person with one deadline, not to everyone.
A movePublish the number now, with its gaps listed beside it, instead of waiting for completeness.
A moveSet a fixed date to revisit and tighten the weakest estimates, then hold that date.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A written method the team can defend and repeat without re-litigating it each cycle.
  • A published number, imperfect, that moves real decisions forward now.
  • Clear ownership of each data gap, with a name and a date attached.
  • Less team anxiety, because 'good enough to publish' is now defined, not felt.
