How do I show my impact when the data is messy?

You can trace some of the path. Not all of it. A customer touches five things before they decide, and your tool counts one. This bothers you because you want to be exact, and exactness is not available to you. Here is what is available: you can be honest about what the numbers show and what they do not. You can make a call and say why. Most people in your position do one of two things instead — they either present an incomplete number as if it were complete, or they hide behind the uncertainty and present nothing. Both are a kind of lying. One flatters the data, the other flatters your fear of being wrong. The gaps in your data are not within your power to close today. Your response to the gaps is. Decide what you will do with imperfect information, and do that.

The person already understands attribution mechanics; what they lack is a disciplined way to act and communicate despite incomplete data, which is a judgment and habit problem more than a knowledge gap.

What’s really going on

You will never get perfect data. Stop waiting for it. Pick the best attribution you have, state its limits plainly, and act. Judgment fills the gap data cannot. The question is not 'is this certain' but 'is this the most honest account I can give, and have I given it.'

🔒 What you’ll build togetherUnlock by starting
A moveName your attribution model out loud to whoever reads your report, in one sentence, before you give the number.
A moveList the two or three touchpoints you know you are undercounting. Do not fix them. State them.
A movePick one decision you are avoiding because the data is imperfect, and make it this week anyway.
A moveWrite your conclusion first, then check whether the data actually supports it or whether you wanted it to.
A moveStop running one more analysis to find certainty that is not there. Set a deadline and report what you have.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A clear, repeatable way to state what your numbers do and do not prove
  • Less time spent chasing a perfect model that does not exist
  • Reports that build trust because you name the limits yourself, before someone else does
  • Faster decisions, because you stop treating uncertainty as a reason to wait
