Why does measuring emissions with missing data feel impossible?

You did not create the gaps in this data. Entire supply chains were built without anyone tracking this. You inherited the mess; you did not make it. Stop treating the gaps as evidence that you are doing the work badly. What you control is narrower than you think, and that is good news. You cannot force suppliers to hand you clean numbers. You can choose a method for estimating what you don't have, write it down, and apply it consistently. That is the whole job. The paralysis is not really about data. It is about wanting to be certain before you speak. Certainty is not available to you here. A defensible, labeled estimate is. Decide to live with that, and the work moves again.

The person already understands emissions measurement in outline; what stops them is the inner resistance to publishing an imperfect number, so coaching carries most of the weight.

What’s really going on

The gaps are not your failure — no one has complete data. Your task is not a perfect number; it is a defensible estimate, built honestly, that you improve next year. Choose a method, write down your assumptions, and publish it. Waiting for clean data is simply refusing to begin.

🔒 What you’ll build togetherUnlock by starting
A moveIn the next hour, list exactly which data points you have, with sources — no estimating yet.
A moveFor every gap, choose one estimation method today and write one sentence on why you chose it.
A moveMark every estimated figure as 'estimated' in the document itself. Do not let it pass as measured.
A moveSet a publish date this week for the number as it stands now, gaps and all.
A moveWrite one line: what you will measure directly next year that you estimated this year.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A number you can explain and defend, not one that is perfect
  • A written method you reuse next year instead of starting from confusion again
  • Less time spent circling the problem, more time spent reporting it
  • A clear answer ready when someone challenges your assumptions
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
