Why do carbon numbers and data gaps overwhelm me?

You did not choose confusion. You chose a field that is still being built while you stand in it. The frameworks disagree. The data you need often does not exist, or it exists in a form no one cleaned up. This is not a sign you are bad at this. This is the actual shape of the work right now. Here is what is within your power. You can learn one method well enough to use today. You can write down what you don't know instead of hiding it. You can start reporting numbers before you feel fully ready. Overwhelm comes from trying to hold the whole field in your head at once. No one does that. People who look confident have simply made peace with gaps that still alarm you.

The overwhelm is real, but you also need concrete method names and gap-handling habits, so teaching and coaching carry nearly equal weight here.

What’s really going on

You are not failing. No one learns every method in a week. Choose one framework. Learn its first three steps. Where data is missing, write an honest estimate and mark it as one. Move forward with what you have. Skill comes from working badly, then better.

🔒 What you’ll build togetherUnlock by starting
A movePick one methodology — the GHG Protocol is the most common starting point — and read only its scope definitions today.
A moveFor every data gap, write the word 'estimate' next to the number and move on. Do not chase certainty that doesn't exist.
A moveBuild one small spreadsheet for one activity, like electricity use, before you try to map a whole organization.
A moveFind one person already doing this work. Ask them one exact question this week, not 'how do I learn this' but 'how did you estimate this when the data was missing.'
A moveSet a weekly limit. Learn two new terms, apply them, then stop. Do not try to read the whole field in one sitting.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A working method for at least one emissions category within two weeks.
  • Data gaps treated as normal parts of the job, not personal failures.
  • A short list of real contacts instead of learning entirely alone.
  • A first imperfect report finished, instead of an endless draft.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
