Why do customers feel dropped when I hand them off?

You say the handoff is sloppy. Look closer. The process is not broken. You are letting go too soon. You close the deal. Then you vanish. Someone who never met the customer must pick up where you left off. They get a form, nothing more. The customer does not feel passed to a new team. They feel abandoned by a person they trusted. That is what falls through the crack — not data, not tickets. Trust falls through. And trust was never the system's job to carry. It was yours. For one more hour, it still is. You cannot control what customer success does after you let go. You can control how you let go. That is the only place to work. Stop waiting for a better process. Close the gap yourself, starting with the next customer you hand off.

What’s really going on

The handoff fails because you treat it as paperwork, not a transfer of trust. The customer trusted you, not your company. Fix this: write down what you know about them, tell the next person before you let go, and tell the customer who is coming. That is within your power. The system is not.

A moveWrite a one-paragraph handover note before every handoff — what the customer cares about, what they fear, what they've already been told.
A moveIntroduce the new person by name before you disappear. One email, three sentences, customer and new contact both on it.
A moveCall the customer once, after the handoff, just to ask how it's going. Not a survey. A voice.
A moveSet a rule for yourself: no handoff without a real conversation first, not just a ticket.
A moveTrack one number — how many customers ask the new person 'who are you?' Drive it to zero.

What changes unlock by starting

  • Customers feel continuity instead of abandonment.
  • Fewer dropped accounts in the weeks right after handoff.
  • A reputation for handoffs people actually trust, not dread.
  • Customer success spends less time repairing damage and more time building the relationship.
