Why does building my coaching business feel like all sales?

You wanted to build something real. Instead most days you spend finding clients, not helping them. This wears you down. You did not sign up to be a salesman. Look at this plainly with your team. Every session you deliver depends on someone first saying yes. That yes is not beneath the work. It is the door to it. Calling it 'not real work' is how you excuse doing it badly. Your pod feels this too. Some carry the selling, others hide from it. Decide together what fair looks like. Then do the unglamorous part on purpose, not by accident.

The real block here is avoidance and self-flattery, not missing information, so coaching carries most of the weight.

What’s really going on

Sales is not a tax on your coaching. It is the coaching, arriving early. You call it selling because you have not decided it is honest work. Choose to do it plainly, or choose a smaller practice with no growth. Both are within your power. Neither is failure.

A movePick the selling task you dread most and do it first each day, before anything easier.
A moveTrade your worst outreach task with a pod member who handles it better, in exchange for one of theirs.
A moveWrite down what you actually sell — a result, not a service — and say that instead of pitching sessions.
A moveSet a weekly number for outreach, calls, or doors opened. Track it like training, not like begging.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop resenting the work that pays for the work you love.
  • Your pod splits selling and coaching by strength, not by guilt.
  • You measure sales effort plainly, without shame or excuses.
  • The business grows because you stopped quietly sabotaging the parts you dislike.
