You and your adult child fight every time you talk

Every call, every visit, it happens — a comment, a flare, and suddenly you are back in the same old fight. You love them and you dread talking to them, and you cannot understand how two people who care so much keep hurting each other this way.

What’s really going on

This exhausting loop is so common, and here is the freeing part: you can only change your half of it, and your half is enough to shift the whole thing. The fights come from old scripts still running — you correcting, them defending — long after they grew up. The way out is to relate to the adult they are instead of the child you raised, and to choose the relationship over being right. You cannot make them change. You can change the dance so there is nothing to push against.
