You can't switch off from work

Work never ends now — the messages follow you home, the laptop is always there, the mind keeps churning long after the day should be done. You check at dinner, before sleep, on weekends, unable to ever fully switch off, and your life is quietly being swallowed by a job that has no edges.

What’s really going on

Modern work has lost its edges, and what you feel is the result. The work has no edges, so you must give it some — not by willpower against the pull but by drawing plain lines it cannot cross, a time past which messages wait, an hour that belongs to your life, since the boundless thing fills everything unless bounded. The mind keeps working because it is never told to stop — so mark a clear close to the day, a small ritual or crossing, for the mind rests when it knows the work is done for now. And beneath it all, your worth is not measured by ceaseless availability — the one always on call belongs to no one, and the rested person who works well within limits serves better than the depleted one always on. You need not earn rest through exhaustion. Where does the work most refuse to end?
