You feel like an impostor waiting to be found out

However well you do, you feel like a fraud — certain that you do not really deserve your role, that your successes were luck, that any day now everyone will see through you. The fear of being exposed follows you into every room, no matter how much you have actually achieved.

What’s really going on

This feeling is so common among capable people that its very commonness is the first clue: if the competent so often feel like frauds, the feeling cannot be a reliable report on competence. Three things free you. It is a feeling generated by the mind, not a fact discovered about your abilities, so it can be felt without being believed. See the rigged accounting the impostor mind keeps — successes explained away as luck, stumbles taken as proof — under which no achievement can ever register, and change that bookkeeping. And let the feeling be there while you act anyway, since confidence tends to follow action, not precede it. You are not a fraud about to be exposed. You are a capable person running a mind that won't let the evidence count. Where does the impostor feeling hit you hardest?
