You feel you have to hide who you really are
You hide your true self — your identity, your beliefs, your nature, some essential part of who you are — because it does not feel safe to be known. You wear a mask in most of your life, accepted for a version of you that is not really you, and the constant concealment is lonely and exhausting, and you long to simply be who you are.
I found one narrow place in a forbidding world where I could be myself, and I know both the necessity and the cost of hiding. The hiding costs more than it appears to save — the mask worn always, the loneliness of never being known, the erosion of a self kept out of sight, a heavy price paid daily in the currency of self, so weigh it honestly against the safety it buys. Judge the danger honestly — some is real, where revelation would bring true harm, and some is inherited, an old fear no longer fitting your present, so sort the real threats from the habit and stop hiding where hiding is no longer required. And find the few before whom you can be wholly yourself — for a self shown to no one withers, so seek the safe ones who can know the real you and love you for it, since you need not be known by everyone but must be known by someone. What part of yourself do you most have to hide?
