You feel you have to have it all figured out to believe
You feel you must have everything figured out before you can believe — every question answered, every doubt resolved, the whole system of faith worked out and secure. Because you cannot reach this complete understanding, you cannot let yourself believe at all, held back by the demand to resolve everything first before you can have any faith.
This demand to have it all figured out before you can believe is a door you have locked against yourself, and I want to help you open it. No one has it all figured out; faith never required that — the most faithful people who ever lived held vast unanswered questions and unresolved mysteries, believing amid all they did not understand, so to demand you resolve everything first is to set a standard no believer has ever met and to guarantee you never believe. Faith is a way of living amid mystery, not a completed system — it is not a finished structure of answers but a manner of moving through a largely mysterious existence with trust and reverence and love, so it does not wait for the system to be complete but is precisely the way of living well in the incompleteness. And begin from the little you do trust, and let it grow — there are likely some things you do sense or find true, a pull toward the sacred, an intuition of meaning, so start from these however few and let your faith grow outward, for faith grows from small beginnings of trust, not from a finished system. What little do you already find yourself trusting?
