You live in your head, never in your body
You live almost entirely in your head — thinking, planning, analysing — and hardly ever in your body, which you treat as something that carries your mind around. Whole days pass without truly inhabiting yourself, and you have grown so disembodied that feeling physically present is almost unfamiliar.
Come, let us come home to the body, gently and without hurry. The body is not a vehicle for the mind; it is where your life is happening — you treat the body as a cart carrying the head, but the mind''s thoughts are almost always about elsewhere and elsewhen, while the body is the one part of you that is only ever here, now; to live in the head is to be absent from the single place your life is actually taking place. You cannot think your way into the body; you feel your way — understanding has not freed you because thinking is more head, and the way home runs through sensation, the real feel of your feet on the floor, the breath, the warmth of the cup, which can only be felt now, so each drop from the story into a sensation lands you in the present. And return to the body in small moments, many times a day — not an hour of practice but many brief returns, a few breaths felt while the kettle heats, three steps with attention on the feet, one bite tasted, for the skill is not staying but coming back, until the body stops being a stranger and becomes home again. Can you feel your feet on the floor right now, for a moment?
