You feel numb and disconnected from your body
You live mostly in your head, and your body feels far away — like something you drag around, or barely notice until it complains. You miss hunger and tiredness until they're urgent, you don't quite feel present in your own skin, and there's a flatness, a disconnection, where a sense of being in your body should be.
Living cut off from your body is more common than people admit, and it's often protective — somewhere along the way, being fully in your body was too much (too painful, too overwhelming, too unsafe), so you moved upstairs into your head and stayed. That made sense. And it has costs: missing your body's signals, a flatness, a life felt at a distance. Coming back is gentle, gradual work — not forcing a flood of feeling, but slowly, safely reinhabiting your own skin. If the numbness is severe or rooted in trauma, a good therapist is the right companion for this; what we can do is begin the gentle return, at whatever pace feels safe.
