You obsess over things you can't control

You fixate on outcomes you cannot affect — what someone will decide, how a thing will turn out, what might happen — turning them over endlessly as if enough worry could bend them your way. It exhausts you and changes nothing, and still you cannot stop trying to control the uncontrollable in your mind.

What’s really going on

This is one of the oldest sources of needless suffering, and it eases with a clear practice. First, sort plainly what is in your power and what is not — your own actions on one side, and another's choices, the outcome, the past and future on the other — for you cannot be responsible for what was never yours to govern. Second, do your part, then release the outcome, pouring yourself into the effort that is yours and letting go of the result that is not; this is not passivity but caring rightly. Third, see that the obsessing is a bid for a certainty that was never on offer, and let the uncertainty be there, unresolved, having done your part. Clutching changes nothing except your peace. What are you obsessing over that isn't actually yours to control?
