You scan every room for the exits
You walk into a room and, without deciding to, you find the exits — where to sit so you can see the whole space and leave quickly. The scanning runs on its own, even in places that are completely safe.
Let us look at this calmly, as something understandable rather than something wrong. This is an old protection still running long after its danger — finding the exits and watching the room is a guard your system built when leaving quickly once mattered, and it did its job then; what remains is that same protection running out of habit after the danger has passed, so there is nothing shameful in it, only a faithful guard on duty too long. The body is guarding against a threat no longer in the room — the vigilance treats a genuinely safe place as though it held the old danger, aiming at the past rather than what is truly in front of you, and naming that gap separates the old alarm from your actual safety. And gently show the body, again and again, that this room is safe — you do not fight the scanning, which only adds tension, but when you notice it, calmly take in the real safety of the real room, and over many repetitions the old protection learns it is no longer needed. When did the scanning start, do you think?
