You start every day reactive, answering everyone else's demands

From the moment you wake, you are reacting — answering messages, meeting demands, putting out fires, carried from one urgent thing to the next by whoever needs you loudest. The day is over before you have done a single thing you meant to, and you never feel like you are leading your own life.

What’s really going on

This reactive life is exhausting, and it turns on how the day begins. Whoever fills your morning first sets your day — begin by opening everyone else's demands and you hand the shaping of your hours to whoever reached you first, spending the day downstream. So do your own first before the world's — give the first of the day, your freshest and unclaimed mind, to the one thing that matters most to you, since the person who tends their own essential work before answering everyone has a self to bring to others the rest of the day; let the messages wait an hour. And not every demand deserves an instant answer — most only feel urgent because they arrive with immediacy, so answer in your own rhythm rather than the sender's, and the one who need not answer everything at once is free to act with intention instead of forever reacting. What claims your morning before you can claim it?
