You use your phone to escape your own mind

The moment there is a gap — a quiet, a boredom, an uncomfortable feeling — your hand is on the phone before you have decided to reach for it. You lose hours to the scroll, and you sense you are using it to avoid something in yourself, but you cannot seem to put it down.

What’s really going on

This is worth understanding rather than just resolving to do better, because the phone is not really the problem. First, see what the reaching is fleeing — almost always a moment of inner discomfort you have not learned another way to meet, so name the feeling and the reaching becomes visible instead of automatic. Second, see that the escape leaves the discomfort untouched and stronger, since fleeing trains you never to build the capacity to sit with your own mind, and the intolerance grows. Third, practice staying with the discomfort a little — pausing when the urge comes, adding friction to the reaching, letting the small unease be met rather than fled. Each time you stay, you grow more able to be with your own mind, which is the only real freedom from needing to escape it. What are you usually feeling when you reach for it?
