You want to raise your kids proud of who they are in a world that isn't
You want your children to grow up proud and secure in who they are — their identity, background, heritage — but you are raising them in a world that may rank them low, judge them for who they are, and try to make them ashamed. You do not know how to root them in pride and prepare them for hostility without either leaving them defenseless or crushing them with despair.
This is one of the most important things a parent in a hostile world can undertake, and it can be done well. Give them the pride before the world gives them the shame — what a child believes about themselves at the core is set early, at home, by you, so fill them deliberately with knowledge of their people's dignity and their own worth before the world can plant its contempt, laying ground the world will later test; lay it deep, and the shame finds no soil. Tell them the truth about the world without breaking their spirit — that some will judge them unfairly, framed as the world's flaw not theirs, giving them clear eyes and a strong spirit both, neither naive nor defeated. And be the proof, in how you carry yourself, that it can be done — your own dignity, meeting slights without shame, teaches more than any words, so tend your own pride and wholeness for them as well as yourself. What do you most want your children to carry of who they are?
