You want to use technology well but don't know where to begin
You know your relationship with technology is out of balance, and you want to set it right — to use these tools well rather than be used by them — but you do not know where to begin. The whole tangle feels too large to sort, and you are unsure what a good, healthy relationship with it would even look like.
This is a fine thing to want, and it is simpler than the tangle looks. Let the tool serve, and refuse to let it rule — the whole of it comes down to this one measure: a tool is to serve your life, and when it begins to rule, the order has gone wrong; ask of each device, does this serve what I value or use me for its own ends. Decide what your life is for, then fit the tools to it — you cannot use the tools well until you know what they serve, so begin not with the technology but with your life, what you value and how you wish to spend your one existence, and then the tools find their place; most do the reverse, letting the tools shape the life, but the wise order is the other way. And begin with one small deliberate change — silence the notifications, keep the phone from the bedroom, protect one screen-free time — for one change made and felt teaches more than any grand resolution and invites the next. Start with one, and let it grow. Where does technology most rule rather than serve you?
