You're turning into your parent and you hate it
You hear it in your own voice — their words, their tone, the very reactions you swore you'd never repeat. The temper, the coldness, the guilt-tripping, the thing you hated growing up, now coming out of you, sometimes at your own kids. It frightens and shames you: the last thing you wanted was to become them, and here it is.
Every one of us carries our parents in us — their voices, their reflexes, the grooves worn into us before we could choose. So hearing them come out of you isn't a sign you're doomed to become them; it's the ordinary weight of what you inherited, and the fact that you hate it means you're already awake to it, which is where change begins. We'll work on catching those inherited moments, understanding where they came from without excusing the harm, and choosing — a moment at a time — a different response. And we'll keep the good they gave you too, because it's not all to be thrown out. You get to decide what you pass on.
