You've become the serious one and you miss being fun

You used to be fun — the one who laughed, who was game for anything, who lightened the room. Somewhere in the years of responsibility you became the serious one instead, the sensible one, the one who no longer plays. You miss the fun person you used to be, and you are not sure where they went.

What’s really going on

You miss the fun you — well, good, because they miss you too, and they are not as far away as you think. You did not lose your fun self; you buried it under duties — it is still down there, muffled under the worries you took on, sending up the occasional signal you were too busy to answer, so you speak of it as dead when it is only underground, waiting for you to dig. The role hardened into an identity you can soften — being the serious one started as a part someone had to play and hardened into who you believe you are, but you may be responsible and fun both, for they are not opposites. And let people see the fun you again, a little at a time — make the joke, suggest the silly outing, be light where you would be grave, until they and you remember who else you are. It is a gift to them, too. When did you last let the fun one out?
