The Physical Manifestation of Attachment

Understanding how clinging to desired outcomes and resistance to reality creates muscular tension and psychosomatic illness.

Why It Matters

Buddhist psychology teaches that attachment—clinging to what we want and resisting what we don't—is the root of suffering. Dipa Ma extended this insight into the somatic realm: attachment patterns literally live in the body as chronic holding. The person attached to remaining young holds facial muscles in a forced smile; the person attached to control holds their jaw; the person attached to being needed holds their chest in a collapsed position. These aren't metaphors—they're physical, observable postural patterns. Somatic symptoms often express unmet attachments the conscious mind has suppressed: the neck pain of unexpressed communication, the stomach tension of swallowed grief, the back pain of unshared burdens. By observing these patterns with mindful awareness, you begin to notice the attachment underneath. The healing comes not from stretching or manipulating the body, but from recognizing and releasing the emotional clinging that creates the tension. Dipa Ma taught that freedom from attachment naturally produces physical relaxation and health.
