The opening definition of yoga in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras—"chitta vritti nirodhah" (the cessation of mental modifications)—might seem contradictory to IFS, which values all parts. Yet the goal is not eliminating parts but achieving the state where the Self (capital S) can observe all vritti without being captured by them. This is precisely the IFS concept of Self-leadership. When mental modifications quiet, not disappear, the Witness consciousness emerges—the part of you that can hold space for all other parts simultaneously. Patanjali teaches that this quieting happens through practice and non-attachment, not suppression. In parts work, this translates to helping reactive parts relax their vigilance because the Self is now reliably present and protective. The goal is not a silent mind but a mind orchestrated by the Self, where each part contributes its wisdom from a place of trust rather than panic or desperation.
