In Patanjali's psychology, samskaras are subconscious impressions left by repeated experiences that automatically shape future perceptions and reactions. Trauma creates powerfully embedded samskaras—conditioned responses that fire automatically when anything resembles the original threat. A survivor of assault may find their nervous system reflexively bracing whenever approached unexpectedly, regardless of safety. Patanjali's system proposes that while samskaras cannot be erased instantly, they can be systematically transformed through contrary practice and disciplined attention. This parallels modern neuroscience showing that repeated new experiences gradually rewire neural pathways. By deliberately practicing safety responses, presence, and trust through yoga and meditation, survivors install new samskaric grooves that eventually become stronger than trauma-based reactions. The key is consistency: each moment of choosing a new response slightly weakens the traumatic samskara's grip while strengthening resilience pathways, ultimately restoring the mind's capacity for flexibility and choice rather than rigid, trauma-driven reaction.
