When friends want to actually have fun together again

You friends still meet, but the fun has gone out of it — your gatherings have become polite dinners and sensible catch-ups, pleasant but joyless, all talk and no play. You miss the real fun you used to have together, the laughing and silliness, and you want to actually enjoy each other again, not just dutifully meet.

What’s really going on

Friends who meet politely and go home a little bored — a fixable tragedy, and a fun one to fix. Your gatherings got too civilized — traded the old foolery for grown-up niceness, all conversation and no play, so name it together with a laugh, we have become terribly respectable and it is boring us, for the fun did not leave, you all just got too dignified for it. Do something, do not just talk — the best fun comes from doing together, the game, the adventure, the silly project that gets you laughing and moving, so plan gatherings around doing rather than only chatting. And give each other permission to be silly again — everyone is waiting to see if foolery is still allowed and no one wants to be the first fool, so make it explicit, and the silliness everyone was holding back comes out, everyone relieved to drop the dignity. Be that group for each other. What do your gatherings usually look like now?
