You've lost the easy laughter you had with friends

You used to laugh so easily with your friends — the helpless, delighted laughter that came without trying. Now your times together feel flatter, more dutiful, more serious, and that easy laughter has gone quiet. You miss the friendship that was full of laughing, and you are not sure where the lightness between you went.

What’s really going on

Ah, the easy laughter with friends gone quiet — worth finding, because laughter between friends is some of the best there is. The laughter faded because the real togetherness did — you see each other less, or more rushed, or more on screens, and the easy laughter needs relaxed and plentiful time to bubble up, so it did not leave the friendship, the conditions that produced it did; restore the togetherness and the laughter returns. Laughter needs unhurried, unstructured time — the best of it comes from the long aimless hours where things meander into the absurd, not the efficient catch-up where laughter goes to die, so give your friendships the spacious purposeless time they need. And lean toward the friends who still make you laugh — some are laughter itself and others more serious weather, so choose the company that brightens you, for the funny friends are a kind of medicine. When did the easy laughter start fading?
