When parents want to support an anxious child together

Your child struggles with anxiety — the worries, the fears, the tears before school, the avoidance — and it hurts to watch. You want to help them, together, as parents, and you are not always sure you agree on how, or whether you are helping or making it worse.

What’s really going on

Supporting an anxious child together is loving work, and getting aligned on a few things makes it far more effective. First, do not accommodate the anxiety into avoidance — each time you help them avoid the feared thing, the anxiety grows, so agree as parents to gently help them face scary things in bearable doses, which is the deepest help, not harshness. Second, steady your own worry so it does not feed theirs — children catch our fear before our words, so help each other stay calm and model that the feared thing is manageable, since your steadiness is itself part of the treatment. Third, get help together when the anxiety is big, watching for the line where it steals the child's life and seeking a good therapist without shame. Face it as an aligned team. Together you can help your child grow bigger than the fear. What does your child's anxiety look like?
