How do I know which of my efforts actually worked?
You did a dozen things before the result came — the extra emails, the late meeting, the favor you called in, the hour you didn't have to spare. The result landed. Now you don't know which of those dozen things mattered, so you repeat all of them next time, tired and unsure. The problem is not that the result is confusing. The problem is that you never named, before you acted, what you expected to cause it. A bet made in silence cannot be checked afterward. You are not bad at thinking this through — you simply have nothing written down to think through. This page will help you sort what already happened, as far as it can be sorted. But its real purpose is to change what you do next time: name the bet before you place it.
You cannot solve this by staring harder at a result that already happened. The work is done. The evidence is tangled with luck, timing, and things outside your control. Before your next effort, write one sentence: what you expect will cause the outcome. That is the only way to ever know.
What changes unlock by starting
- You stop repeating your entire effort out of superstition.
- You can state, before you act, what you expect will work — and check it later.
- You spend less energy on actions that never mattered.
- You feel less at the mercy of luck, because you are testing instead of guessing.
