Life has become all obligation and no delight

Your life is one long list of shoulds — the things you must do, the people you must see, the duties you must meet — with no room left for anything you actually want. Every hour is spoken for by obligation, and delight has been squeezed out entirely. You are meeting everyone's needs and living none of your own joy.

What’s really going on

A life of all obligation and no delight — and I suspect you built more of this prison than you realize, which is actually the good news. You have said yes to everything and yes to no delight — piling on duties one reasonable yes at a time until there was no door for joy, so the crush is partly assembled by you, and what was built by yeses can be loosened by a few honest noes. Every no to an obligation is a yes to a delight — the noes you fear are how you make room for joy, so practice the honest no, kindly and without over-explaining, hearing it as a yes to your own life. And put a little delight in on purpose, as its own obligation — use your own machinery, scheduling joy as firmly and non-negotiably as any duty, for a person ruled by obligation often gets delight in no other way. What obligations are you carrying that you don't truly owe?
