You keep waiting to enjoy life until everything's done

You keep telling yourself that once things settle down — once the work eases, the money is secure, the kids are grown, the list is finished — then you will finally relax and enjoy life. But that day never comes; there is always more to do first, and you keep deferring your joy to a someday that never quite arrives.

What’s really going on

Ah, you are saving your joy for later, like a man saving his appetite for a feast that keeps being postponed — and starving in the meantime. Let me spoil the surprise: the everything is never done, and never will be — finish one thing and two appear, forever, so if you wait for it all to be done you will wait your whole life and enjoy none of it, chasing a horizon that walks away as you approach. Joy is not the reward at the end but the thread through — a life lived as all payment and no purchase is all labor and no feast, but joy is meant to be woven through the journey, so you need not finish everything to deserve some today. So take a little joy today, unfinished list and all — the list will wait, patient as ever, whether or not you laughed this afternoon, so you may as well laugh. Later is a country you will never actually arrive in. What are you waiting to be done before you let yourself enjoy things?
