You keep waiting for the perfect conditions to create — the right space, the right time, the right mood, the freedom from distraction, the proper tools — and they never quite arrive, so you never quite begin. You want to stop waiting for ideal circumstances that never come and make your work in the imperfect reality you actually live in.
I wrote my tale amid the noise and duties of a crowded court, in nothing like ideal solitude, so I can tell you plainly that the conditions you wait for are not required. Perfect conditions never come; makers work in imperfect ones — there is always something not right, some lack or interruption, and the makers who make do so in the imperfect conditions that are all anyone ever has, for the ideal is not a real state that appears but a mirage that recedes as you approach. Waiting for perfect conditions is often fear in disguise — it is easier to say the conditions are not yet right than to face the vulnerability of beginning, so ask honestly whether the conditions are truly the obstacle or the respectable excuse behind which a deeper reluctance hides. And make with what you have, where you are — you do not need the better space or freer time, only the present imperfect moment and its available means, so take up whatever is at hand and begin now.
