You can't believe anyone genuinely likes you

When someone is warm toward you, you read it as politeness, obligation, or something they will withdraw once they know you better. The affection never quite lands as real — you reinterpret it into manners every time.

What’s really going on

Let us look gently at why warmth never seems to reach you, for the trouble is not where it feels. You are running every warmth through a filter that removes the warmth — when someone is kind, it passes first through a belief that you are not truly likeable, which reinterprets it as politeness or obligation before you feel it, so the affection never lands as real not because it is not real, but because the filter removes the warmth on the way in. The belief protects you from a disappointment it also guarantees — by never believing anyone likes you, you never risk trusting an affection that proves false, but you also guarantee you never receive the affection that is actually there, paying for safety from a possible hurt with the certain, continuous loss of real connection. And let one instance of warmth be taken at face value, as an experiment — you will not argue the belief away, so take one clear kindness and, just once, let it stand unreinterpreted, and notice that receiving it does not destroy you, putting a crack in the belief's certainty. Whose warmth do you find hardest to believe?
