You don't know who you are under everyone's expectations
You have spent your life being what everyone expected — the good child, the reliable one, what your family, culture, and relationships demanded — and now you realize you do not know who you actually are underneath it all. Stripped of everyone else's expectations, you draw a blank, unsure which of your selves is real and what you would even be if you consulted only yourself.
This is a serious question, and a worthy one — to ask who you are beneath what everyone required. You have been so busy being what others need that you never asked what you are — the daughter they wanted, the professional required, the self each relationship demanded, leaving no room for the prior question, so you have not lost yourself but never been permitted to find yourself, and that permission you can now grant. Peel back the expectations to find what is yours — examine each belief and want and ask, is this mine or placed in me by others' demands, keeping some borrowed things having chosen them, until you know which self is actually you. And discover yourself by acting, not only reflecting — do the thing you want rather than the expected, and observe the you that emerges, for identity is found in action as much as thought. The self is still there, beneath it all. What expectations have shaped you most?
