You're constantly underestimated and it wears you down

People constantly underestimate you — assume you are less capable, less intelligent, less than you are, because of how you look or where you come from or what you are. You have to prove yourself over and over just to be seen as adequate, and the endless underestimation is exhausting and has begun to make you doubt yourself.

What’s really going on

I was underestimated my whole life by those who could not imagine what a woman might be, so I will speak to you as one who knows this weariness. Their underestimation is a fact about them, not about you — the low estimate reveals the limits of their perception, shaped by their assumptions about someone like you, not a measurement of your real capacity, so the eye that underrates you tells its own story, not yours. Do not shrink your estimate of yourself to match theirs — the great danger is that the low expectations seep inward and you become smaller in truth, so hold your own accurate high estimate fiercely, for many capable people have been talked out of their gifts by a world that underrated them. And let your work, in time, speak louder than their assumptions — it is unjust that you must prove what others are granted freely, and it is often effective, so spend your energy on the excellent work rather than demanding to be believed. Where are you most underestimated?
