You feel you don't fully belong anywhere
You feel you belong nowhere completely — too different for every group, fully at home in none, always a little outside wherever you are. Whatever the circle, you are the one who does not quite fit, and you carry a lonely, rootless sense of having no place that is truly yours, no group that is fully your own.
I fit no category my world offered — not fully a nun, not fully a scholar, not what a woman was permitted to be — so I know this rootlessness intimately. Belonging by sameness was never your only option — you assume belonging must come from matching a group's type and so qualify for none, but there is belonging by acceptance rather than similarity, where you are welcomed as you are, difference and all; you need not find your copies, only those who make room for your particular self. Those who belong nowhere fully can belong many places partly — because you are not wholly of one world, you can move among many, the distributed belonging of the bridge, wider and freer than the singular kind. And the deepest belonging is being at home in yourself — the person who belongs to themselves carries a home no group's rejection can take, portable and unshakable. Belong first to yourself. Where do you most feel you don't fit?
