You feel your doubt has cost you your community
Your doubt or loss of faith has cost you your religious community — the belonging, the relationships, the home you had within it — because you could no longer profess what you no longer believed. You feel the double loss of both your faith and your community, isolated and cast out for your honesty, grieving the belonging your doubt has cost you.
To lose your community along with your certainty is a double wound, and I want to honor both the grief and the honesty that caused it. Grieve the community honestly; the loss is real — a religious community is not only shared beliefs but a home and a web of relationships and a belonging, so losing it because your honesty would not let you profess what you no longer believed is a genuine grief, and you need not rush past it to justify your honesty. A belonging conditional on professing false belief was already fragile — that you could remain only by pretending, and were lost the moment you were honest, means the belonging required your dishonesty and could not hold the real you, which reframes the loss even as it does not remove it. And you can find a community that holds your honest self — the loss of the old community is not the end of belonging, for there are communities of fellow seekers and the questioning where your honest doubt is welcome rather than cause for exclusion, so your honesty has not doomed you to isolation but freed you to seek a truer belonging that embraces rather than hides the real you. What did you lose, and what belonging do you long for now?
