You've lost your sense of wonder

The world has gone flat and ordinary. Nothing amazes you anymore, nothing lights you up, nothing feels magical the way it did when you were younger. You move through a gray, familiar world with none of the wonder you once felt, and you miss the version of you that found things astonishing.

What’s really going on

Ah, you have lost your wonder — misplaced it, more likely, the way people do. Let me help you find it, for it is closer than you think. The world did not grow dull; your looking did — the world is exactly as astonishing as ever, but familiarity drew a film over your eyes, so you pass the miraculous daily and call it nothing; the wonder waits behind the too-familiar. So look at one ordinary thing as if you had never seen it — your own hand, a tree, the steam off your tea, as though you just arrived from another world; the child sees everything this way and is drunk on wonder all day, so borrow the child's eyes. And wonder lives in slowing down and paying attention — it cannot be felt at speed, so give one thing your full unhurried looking, for wonder is what attention finds when it stops rushing. The wonder is not gone. What used to fill you with amazement, once?
