You feel the sacred has gone out of the world
You feel the sacred has drained out of the world — that we live in a flat, disenchanted, merely material reality where nothing is holy, nothing shines, nothing points beyond itself. The world feels emptied of the mystery and sacredness that people once seemed to find in it, and you miss a dimension of reality that seems to have vanished from the modern world.
This felt disenchantment, the sense that the holy has drained from the world, is one of the deep sorrows of our age — and I want to question whether the sacred truly left, or whether our seeing changed. The sacred did not leave the world; we stopped seeing it — the same world that once shone with the sacred is the world we live in now, and what changed is our way of looking, our habits that have flattened the luminous into the merely material; the bush still burns, but we have learned to see only firewood. The disenchanted way of seeing is a habit, not the truth — we have been trained by an age that reduces everything to the measurable to see only atoms and mechanisms, and this feels like plain fact when it is one interpretation among others, a lens we mistake for reality. And recover the sacred through wonder, attention, and reverence — the faculties that perceive the sacred have atrophied, so approach the world with wonder rather than jaded knowing, give it reverent attention, and watch what returns. The flatness may be in the lens, not the world. Where did the world last feel sacred to you?
