You go through the motions of faith but feel nothing

You still go through the motions of your faith — the prayers, the practices, the observances — but you feel nothing, empty, disconnected from any life or meaning in them. The forms remain but the spirit has gone out of them, and you perform your faith hollowly, troubled by the deadness where there used to be, or should be, something alive.

What’s really going on

This hollowness in the forms you keep is a quiet grief, and it matters that you notice it, because the noticing is itself the beginning of the way back. The emptiness you notice means you remember the fullness — one who felt nothing and did not mind would not be troubled, so your disquiet at the empty motions shows something in you knows they should hold more and wants it, which is the discontent that precedes renewal, not dead settledness. Bring your full presence to one small practice — the motions feel empty partly because they have become automatic, done while your mind is elsewhere, so choose a single practice and do it with complete attention, slowly, wholly present, for presence is what fills a practice with life, and one fully present act holds more than a hundred absent ones. And let the practice be a place of longing, not performance — you may approach your practices as duties to discharge correctly, but they come alive when infused with your genuine ache for the sacred, so bring your longing rather than your compliance, letting the practice be where your heart reaches. Notice, be present, bring your longing. Which practice would you begin with?
